Progress in Commercialization of Biojet /Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF): Technologies and policies
The webinar covered the latest Task 39 report on SAF that was published in Q1 2024. Since the last IEA Bioenergy Task 39 biojet/SAF report in 2021, the production and use of SAF have grown substantially. In addition to the increasing availability of SAF, the number of new facilities announced and under construction should result in an exponential increase in SAF production by 2030. This has been partially driven by SAF-specific policies in jurisdictions such as the EU (the ReFuelEU Aviation mandate) and the USA (the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and state-specific SAF tax credits).
As covered in more detail within the report, there has been significant progress in the commercialization of technologies accompanied by considerable investment in research and development. The current status of SAF technology pathways, opportunities and challenges were the core of this webinar.
