Seventh Session of the IRENA Assembly – Thematic side-meeting – Bioenergy’s Role in Doubling Renewable Energy Supply

Part I: Sustainable Bioenergy Potential  

There is great potential for the sustainable intensification of land use – higher crop yields, reduced food waste, systematic collection of farm and forest residues, and replanting of degraded and neglected land – to boost bioenergy production alongside greater fuel production and increased carbon sequestration. This session will set forth a paper on Sustainable Approaches to Expansion of Bioenergy, which IRENA has developed jointly with the Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme of the International Energy Agency (IEA), UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) and other partners. A discussion of priority policies and actions will focus on how to harness enough of the potential to meet climate and energy access goals in the face of concerns over food requirements and environmental protection.

Part II: Bioenergy Technology Pathways and Scale-up Tools

This session will present IRENA’s work on cost-effective technologies for bioenergy conversion and successful strategies for bioenergy scale-up. Recent work will be highlighted, and proposed work outlined. Participants will be invited to provide their feedback and suggest additional projects.
