The 2015 Conference will provide stakeholders from industry, academia and policy with an insight into recent research and market developments in bioenergy. All topics covered by IEA Bioenergy and by partner organisations like FAO, GBEP and UNDP will be addressed. A special section is dedicated to industrial developments and applications.
The new IEA Bioenergy Strategic Plan 2015-2020 places greater emphasis on optimizing the economic, environmental and social value of sustainable bioenergy, including some focus on biorefinery value chains. Enhanced focus on collaboration with the IEA Secretariat and other Implementing Agreements as well as relevant international bodies is a feature of the plan, in addition to greater engagement with industry and dissemination effort to the bioenergy community.
Task 37 has recently published a consolidated “Country Report Summary 2014” The report contains the main elements of activities within Task 37 member countries relating to the progress of the respective biogas and biomethane sectors with respect to installed capacity and biogas utilisation, plans and trends for future development, financial support systems in use and a summary of key research and development projects. This summary is aimed primarily at dissemination to policy makers and project developers and is complemented by individual Powerpoint presentations of Country Reports on the Task 37 website.
Many governments across the globe have defined national ‘bioeconomy’ strategies. However, it remains unclear how the current economy will shift towards a future bioeconomy where chemicals, materials, transport fuels, and other high-value products are derived from non-food materials. Under the banner of “Biomass Trade and Supply in a Global Bio-Based Economy”, IEA Bioenergy Tasks 40 and 42, together with the European Commission funded project DiaCore, will host a workshop on May 5, 2015 in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy. Draft findings of a recent Intertask study between Tasks 34, 40, and 42 on the same topic will be presented, and the viewpoints of policy makers and representatives from the biofuels, biopower, and logistics industry will be heard and discussed. The second part of the workshop will cover Italian research perspectives and a site-visit to the MATRICA Biorefinery (a Versalis-NOVAMONT joint venture) at the workshop location.
