Brazil hosts an international event on bioenergy, amid G20 discussions for the decarbonization of global economies
The BBEST – IEA Bioenergy 2024 international conference brings together international references in the bioeconomy and bioenergy in São Paulo. International organizations, public policy makers, scientists, researchers and bioeconomy entrepreneurs from several countries have already confirmed their presence.
São Paulo (Brazil), October 7, 2024 – The city of São Paulo hosts the international conference BBEST – IEA Bioenergy 2024, which brings together two conferences in the same event: the Brazilian Bioenergy Science and Technology Conference (BBEST), which is held every three years in Brazil, and the IEA Bioenergy triennial conference, which has been held in different places around the world, also on a three year basis.
The BBEST – IEA Bioenergy 2024 agenda includes today’s main bioenergy and biofuels solutions, innovation in the sector and ways to finance global bioenergy efforts.
“Bioenergy plays an essential role in the decarbonisation of global economies”, argues Dina Bacovsky, co-president of the conference, and chair of the IEA Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme. She continues: “Global cooperation is crucial to support the deployment of sustainable bioenergy. IEA Bioenergy is proud to bring together international experts to collaborate on bioenergy technologies and system aspects. We are glad to showcase key results and findings of our work in this conference.”
Time for multilateral decisions
“BBEST – IEA Bioenergy 2024 gained additional muscle this year, as Brazil is mediating multilateral decisions that will determine a fair future for the energy transition, creating opportunities for social development”, states Glaucia Mendes Souza, co-president of the conference. She is professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) and coordinator of the Bioenergy Program (BIOEN) at the Foundation of Research Support for the State of São Paulo (FAPESP).
For Souza, BBEST – IEA Bioenergy will have an even more relevant role in 2024, as it promotes a debate that precedes the G-20 Summit meeting, in Rio de Janeiro, in November, and can contribute decisively to the multilateral debate. “By assuming the presidency of the G20 in 2024, Brazil has put the challenges of energy transition around the world on the table. And we firmly believe that biofuels – an area in which Brazil has a lot to contribute both in research and development – will be fundamental to achieving the goals established in the Paris Agreement, but also the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially in emerging countries with large areas of cultivable land”, she adds.
Confirmed keynote speakers
Expected for the opening panel of the conference are André Aranha Corrêa do Lago of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Jim Spaeth of Bioenergy Technologies Office at the United States Department of Energy; Sangita Kasture of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of India; and Maria Georgiadou of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation.
Conference sessions
The conference, in addition to several parallel sessions, will feature two public policy panels: “How public policies can support the implementation of sustainable bioenergy with a view to its most effective applications”, and “Building trust and creating synergies in the bioeconomy”.
The parallel panels will cover all facets of bioenergy from biomass feedstock mobilization to the processing of biomass in biorefineries; the production and use of transport biofuels for road, marine and aviation sectors; production and use of biogas and biomethane; clean heat and power production from biomass as well as carbon capture. Specific sessions are also dedicated to sustainability aspects, including sustainable land use.
The BBEST – IEA Bioenergy 2024 conference will also feature, among the various initiatives of its program, a session celebrating 25 years of bioenergy research in the State of São Paulo.
