On Friday, 8th September 2017, Professor Martin Junginger, Task leader of IEA Bioenergy Task 40 (Sustainable biomass markets and international bioenergy trade to support the biobased economy) gave his inauguration speech as a Professor at Utrecht University with the title “Towards a Bio-Based Economy: Between Panacea and Pandemonium” (https://www.uu.nl/agenda/de-toekomst-van-schone-brandstof-biologisch-synthetisch-of-schoon-fossiel).

In his presentation (see https://www.uu.nl/organisatie/faculteit-geowetenschappen/onderzoek/oraties) Professor Junginger clearly explained the need for sustainable biomass in the future material and energy mix. Some of the key points included:

  • Optimisation of the use of biomass for materials and energy
  • Sustainability requirements for all biomass (including use for food, etc.)
  • The pro-active approach his faculty will take to tackle these problems

Following the presentation, Professor Junginger was congratulated by Ir Kees Kwant, Chair of IEA Bioenergy.
