Objective

1.         Definition and Objective

(a)  Definition

‘Direct Thermochemical Liquefaction’ is the controlled thermal degradation of biomass in any form to derive valuable energy and chemical products. It includes thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis, hydrothermal and solvo-thermal liquefaction.

(b)  Objective

The objective of Task 34 is to advance the international implementation of bioenergy technology through strategic information analysis and dissemination in the areas of direct thermochemical liquefaction of biomass (including bio-based waste) for bioenergy applications such heat, power, transportation fuel, and the production of chemicals.

2.         Scope of the Task

(a)     The Participants will have R&D programmes within their countries in order to meet the above objectives.

(b)    The Participants will carry out co-operative research work towards reaching the objectives described in paragraph 1(b) above, based on the national R&D programme referred to in sub-paragraph (a) above.

(c)    The Programme of Work will comprise the following:

  1. WP1 – Technical: Support technical and economic assessment of biomass liquefaction technologies
    • Techno-economic assessment of DTL technologies report
    • Contribute to co-processing bio-oil/biocrudes in petroleum refineries Task 39 report
  2. WP2 – Technical: Validate applicable analytical methods for bio-oil/biocrude product evaluation:
    • Validation of analytical method report or journal article
    • Advanced analytical techniques workshop/webinar
  3. WP3 – Dissemination and facilitation: Support commercialisation through standards and lessons learnt:
    • Report on standardisation of bio-oil/biocrude analysis and application
    • Technical notes on R&D and commercialisation experiences
  4. WP4 – Dissemination and facilitation: Facilitate information exchange with stakeholders:
    • Six issues of PyNe Newsletter
    • Direct thermochemical liquefaction technologies brochure
    • Website content refresh
    • Five workshops, seminars and/or site visits with key stakeholders aligned with Task meetings
    • Success stories report
    • Three country reports
  5. Information exchange with other IEA IA’s, other IEA Bioenergy Tasks and other international networks on thermal biomass conversion worldwide
  6. ExCo interaction and support.
